San Jose CA dentist
One thing about root canal therapy that is nearly universal is that you will be very aware when it is needed. It usually announces itself with symptoms such as tooth pain (often severe) when you chew or apply pressure to the tooth, sensitivity to hot or cold items, tooth discoloration, and gum tenderness. Here at Santa Teresa Family Dental, we don't want you to be scared of having this procedure done. Despite its reputation, it is nothing to be nervous about. Most patients report little or no pain at all, owing much to advanced techniques and tools used by our
San Jose CA dentist.
The reason why you need root canal therapy is that your tooth's pulp, down near the nerve, has become infected. How? Well, your tooth is protected by a barrier of enamel and dentin. But if tooth decay causes a large enough cavity, there is path for bacteria to get inside that barrier. This can also happen if a filling is deep enough, or when your tooth is chipped or cracked. Inflammation leads to infection, and pain typically follows. You will want to act with urgency. The problem is only likely to get worse, and will not resolve on its own. Also, if the tooth is not addressed in a timely manner, you could end up losing it. Depending on how many canals the tooth in question has, you may need one session, or more than one. Our San Jose CA dentist removes the damaged pulp and nerve, cleans and disinfects the canals, and then seals them. You will be fitted with a temporary crown between sessions if you need to come back. And when the tooth heals, you will return to our office so that you can have impressions taken for a permanent crown, which will restore the tooth to its full size and functionality.
